A welcome at Zagreb International Airport followed by a half an hour’s drive to Westin Zagreb, a 5 star hotel situated less than a kilometer from all central squares. For the first day in Zagreb we recommend a stroll towards Croatian National Theatre with the surrounding area, followed by a stroll towards Flower Square, Ban Jelačić Square (the central town square) and Zrinjevac Park. We also recommend one or two Zagreb’s accessible museums in the vicinity of the hotel and Ban Jelačić Square (like the Technical Museum, Ferdinand Budicki Car Museum, Mimara Museum and Klovićevi Dvori Gallery) and authentic restaurants or cake shops (like Vinodol Restaurant, Kaptol Klet Restaurant, Medvedgrad Pub & Brewery, Pivana Pub & Brewery, Zagreb Cake Shop and Kavana Procaffe).
A breakfast at the hotel followed by an Upper Town guided tour in the vicinity of Ban Jelačić Square that includes: a funicular ride to Strossmayer Promenade, a delightful tree alley setting with a stunning panorama of Zagreb; a visit to St. Mark’s Square, the home of the Croatian Parliament and the crossroad of the surrounding churches and museums; a short stroll through the Stone Gate, a charming shrine and once the eastern gate to medieval Gradec Town; and finally a stroll down Tkalčić Street, one of the two major hubs of bustling street activity full of history and packed with cafes and restaurants. Personal leisure activities followed by an afternoon Lower Town guided tour in the vicinity of the hotel and Ban Jelačić Square that includes: a stroll towards Croatian National Theatre and Music Academy with the surrounding area, including Roosevelt Square, Mažuranić Square and Marshal Tito Square; a visit to Flower Square, King Tomislav Square, Zrinjevac Park and Zagreb Cathedral, the most monumental and the most impressive Gothic-style sacral building southeast of the Alps, with the history dating back as far as 1093 (only individual visits allowed).
A breakfast at the hotel followed by a two hour drive to Opatija seaside resort, a fashionable destination for the Austrian imperial family and Austrian nobility, who was building luxury hotels and villas in the thriving period of Belle Époque. We recommend a stroll down Franz Joseph I Promenade, a famous coastal footpath that stretches from Volosko to Lovran and a relaxing leisure among the town’s exquisitely charming parks and sculptures. A 20 minute drive to Rijeka, the principal seaport and the third-largest city in Croatia, once the main maritime outlet for Hungary and the eastern part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Personal leisure activities in the vicinity of Korzo, a striking bustling promenade at the town center, followed by a two hour drive to Zagreb.
A breakfast at the hotel followed by an hour’s drive to Kraneamus Neanderthal Museum in Krapina located at the famous Hušnjakovo Hill site, where fossilized Neanderthal remains dating back 130,000 years were found. The museum offers the most numerous and most varied collection of such fossils in the world. A guided tour of the museum’s permanent exhibition followed by an hour’s drive to Varaždin, a baroque gem and Croatia’s capital within the Austro-Hungarian monarchy from 1756 to 1776. Also known as “Little Vienna”, the town is brimming with historical sights, churches and monuments of the period. We recommend a lunch at one of the town’s traditional restaurants, which will be followed by a guided tour of major attractions in the vicinity of the main town square. Personal leisure activities followed by a 90 minute drive to Zagreb. For the final evening in Zagreb and some soaking up of the local atmosphere we recommend either the rock clubs Booze and Blues and Ribnjak or the dance clubs H20 and Coffee Inn, e.g.
